You’ve watched them grow up, from rambunctious 7-year-olds to 40-something
adults. What began in 1964 has turned into a lifelong chronicle and one of the
most unusual real-life narratives in film history.

Roger Ebert calls it “Possibly the most exciting use of the documentary medium
ever!".

Forty-two years ago a group of seven year old children were interviewed for a
program called 7 Up, conceived to test the accuracy of the Jesuit saying “give
me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man”. Director Michael
Apted, who has since moved to Hollywood to direct films including Gorky Park,
The Coal Miner’s Daughter, The World Is Not Enough and Gorillas in the Mist, has
returned every seven years to chart the children’s progress through life.

49 Up visits the group of people whose lives have been documented since they
were seven, to see where they are now as they approach their half century. This
groundbreaking documentary series has become one of the most acclaimed long-term
filmic studies of real people ever made. In 49 Up more life-changing decisions
are revealed, more shocking announcements made and more of the original group
are taking part than ever before.
