New Short Film

Are you looking for an opportunity to expand your acting skills?

Four actors are required for a short film. The film is called 'Alhaji'. It follows Alhaji as he tries to start a new life in Australia after arriving from Africa. While living in Australia he meets Jenny and Ryan. Both help him to adjust to the new environment and help him to deal with the pressure involved in obtaining a visa for his sister.

The film will be shown at the 2009 Triumphant International Refugee Film Festival. All actors will receive a copy of the film after the screening of the film festival. This is unpaid work but it would be a great opportunity to develop acting skills.

If you are looking for a great opportunity to take part in a new short film production, then this is it. There are also opportunities for crew members.

Are you interested in becoming a stunt person or a physically-orientated actor? Breakenback Stunts is putting on a seminar with a Canberra group called Clear Vision Films. The seminar is designed for people who are not yet working in the industry or who are just starting out but are fairly serious about becoming stunt people.

A director is almost ready to shoot his short film for Tropfest 2009.

Shoot dates are planned for anywhere between 4-6 weeks from now, so crew and cast are needed.

Eight actors are needed, 4 of which will have fairly large roles.

An assistant director/camera operator is also required. Preferrably someone who can contribute to the creative process as well as being technical!

If you don't fit either of these descriptions then other helpers are always welcome, from make-up artists to runners!

Speaking of action - activities for CiNEsoc in 2008 have officially begun! Our first meeting last Wednesday was a hit and allowed our new members to get to know their fellow filmmakers.

For those of you who missed out, it's not too late! Come along to our next meeting on Wednesday the 16th of April (5pm in Robert Webster room 327) and you can join one of our four filmmaking groups before the cameras start rolling.

Next meeting we will be looking more closely at the key decisions that are made in pre-production and how everyone can contribute to making their group's film more creative!

As one project ends, so another begins!! One of our CiNEsoc members is creating a short film in the new year, through the 'Raw Nerve' production development initiative and they are seeking a sound designer/recordist! This is a great chance to get creative both on and off set, and you'll be able to get your hands on DVD copies of the film after it's finished- so you can show off to friends, family and potential employers! As expected, now that the holidays are here the filming has begun! Expect there to be many film projects during these Summer holidays - as it is the best chance to spend some quality time pursuing cinematic endeavours - be they for fame and glory or just for fun!

A talented UNSW filmmaker, Jeremiah, is producing a short film bound for Tropfest next year and he'd like to call for all interested students to help out and experience what it's like to be on set!

The shooting schedule is still being organised but it will take place on some or all of the following days of the weekend: Sat Dec 1, Sun Dec 2,Sat Dec 8, Sun Dec 9.

Jeremiah is happy to provide written references for the students portfolios, and of course a whole lotta fun!

After the Dachshunds

Our much anticipated 2007 Media Show 'Student Pro-Dachshunds' was a great success! A crowd of over 200 guests packed into the Chauvel to enjoy the 23 brilliant student works on show. There were a few technical hiccups but what would a media event be without them?! It was lovely to see all of the guests (including some CiNEsoc faces - good to see you there!) mingling after the show and talking about the wonderful works they had just seen on the silver screen.

We were lucky enough to have Metro Screen supporting the event and awarding 10 free year-long memberships to Metro Screen to some of the most highly commended filmmakers. Palace Cinemas were also supporting the show, providing cash prizes to the filmmakers whose films received the most audience votes!

It was a great occasion and something that CiNEsoc (and of course our fellow Filmsoc) can hope to have a hand in every year!

Hi guys - class is ending, those last essays are being handed in and exams are almost over...So it's time to get revved up about 'Student Pro-Dachshunds' - the 2007 Media Show. Thursday the 8th of November will be a night where you can relax and enjoy a programme of outstanding short video, animation and sound works created by UNSW students. After the show you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer (complimentary with your ticket) and reflect on the amazing talents of your peers!

This is a 'not to miss' event so we'd love to see you there! Tickets are limited so pick one up before the show (just $4 from the Media office on Level 3 of the Robert Webster building - or call 9385 4856) or grab one at the door on the night for $5.

If you haven't heard yet - CiNEsoc is playing an integral role in this year's UNSW Media Show - and so can you! Traditionally the media show has been a display of media students' work in the Robert Webster building, but this year it will take the form of a public screening of selected short video works created by any UNSW students (not just Media students) with a passion and talent for film!

So if that's you, submit your work to be judged by the selection panel (a mixture of CiNEsoc and Filmsoc executives) by uploading it to the site http://sausagedogs.multiply.com or by dropping a hard copy into the drop box on Level 3 of the Robert Webster building.

The show will be held on the 8th of November at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington at 6pm.

Australia's FIRST Silent Film Festival

Please check out the following, it's for Australia's first and only Silent FIlm Festival, hosted by the Deaf Society of NSW. It will be opened by David Stratton next Friday, March 30th, at 5.45pm @ the lovely Orpheum Theatre in Cremmorne. If anyone is interested/available to check it out, please do so. The festival runs over 3 days, starting next Friday until Sunday April 1st. Many of the screenings will be accompanied by a live theatrical orchestra - something you don't see too often. Below is an email from James @ 2easy Movies. You may have seen the DVD vending machine across from the Roundhouse on campus recently and said to yourself, "wtf?" - so here's the lowdown! James has been in contact with us and is keen to develop a relationship with CiNEsoc members. Please review his email and if you wish to take up the cool offers @ 2easy Movies, please let us know!!!

I am a student here at UNSW and I have tried to create the lowest possible
prices for movie rentals given the student population. This has been
achieved by offering approximately half price rentals when compared to the
major DVD rental competitors.

I am trying to change the usual pay-per-DVD approach when renting movies,
and I am offering an 'unlimited' monthly, yearly or even semesterly
membership (though the pay-per-DVD approach is still possible). This
eliminates late fees which is particularly important for uni students who
don't live on campus or those who might want to rent over the weekend or
for more than one night.

It occurred to me that this type of high-activity/rental membership could
be perfect for students that are members of the film society at UNSW. Once
film society members signed up, I would be happy to follow their
suggestions as to the types and genres of film that I could stock.

Gday all,

We've recently undertaken an external project and guided it under the CiNEsoc banner. It's called "Agnostic Salt" and involves talented crew stemming from the Film production faculty at North Sydney TAFE. When I say involves I simply mean two of the key roles - director, D.O.P and 1st A.D - there are still many roles up for grabs. Essentially, this is a chance to get involved and be part of something right from the get-go.

What I want to bring to everyone's attention is the SHOOT DATES over the coming weeks, and the opportunity for new members to get a taste of on-set action for the first time this year. We also need members to lend a hand with fundraising. The details are as follows:

Dates: Monday 26th March; Monday 2nd April and Monday 16th April.

The shoot will use the sensational Panasonic P2 camera (shoots 720p) and thus requires a specific crew member who is proficient with Final Cut Pro, has their own laptop and can bring it on-set. The reason for this is because the P2 employs a real-time workflow where you need to digitise the footage from the CARD it shoots to (no tape) on-set. This person is affectionately known as "The Techy" and should possess sound file management skills.

Please don't forget to check the BLOG on a weekly basis for our updates. As you all should now know, we've secured the date for the Premiere of "The Dealer" for Wednesday Aprill 11, 5.45pm @ Chauvel Cinema.

Also, we've now received a few scripts for production as part of the STS competiton (refer to your events calander). Keep them coming for the chance to have your film made!

It's SHOW TIME!

Time to give short films the interactive treatment that only Show-Fest can!

Although a short film can be submitted to any number of film festivals, TV or online, nothing beats the Show & Tell format for which Show-Fest has become well known. Not your typical short film fest, be prepared to share your filmmaking stories, compare notes and lessons learnt. Also instead of anonymity, we want to see everyone involved, inviting all cast & crew for the Q & A. In addition, this is a competitive fest with audience voting and prizes. In the past, outstanding films have premiered at Show-Fest that would travel further afield to win at international fests.

I would like to shoot the film by the end of this week so I can start editing it video/sound asap. The entire shooting period will take a maximum of 3 days, including an evening and it will be shot in Sydney CBD and Cronulla. The last scene will be shot in Cronulla in a church.

Synopsis:
The story of a man who at a young age is told that he will die on his 22nd birthday. He goes through life with the mindset of one who will inevitably die young, preparing for his fated demise by building his entire world around it. Not knowing if he is more afraid of dying or the potential fallacy of the prophecy, he attempts suicide on the night before his 22nd birthday.

Hey guys,

We have a Hip-Hop artist who wants a couple of music videos made for him. Below is the brief:

2 Of A Kind - 2 lovers on a tropical looking beach. The girl is
dressed Hawaiian hula style and she plays around in some waterfalls.
This is hopefully a 1 day shoot at a location I've already got, it
just needs good available light, a make-up artist, a gud
director/camera person with a tripod, some reflectors etc. Maybe some
lights. Whatever's clever.

Black Footsteps - Gritty documentary style, footage of a gig I'm
playing at Redfern with a bunch of other reggae acts and the massive
Koori flag behind us. The rap part will cut to me doing an interview
at Koori radio with one of the presenters - but I'll be rapping the
lyrics. Maybe some footage of kids playing around the area might work
to cut with it. Not much else is really needed. Can be shot in 2 days.

KUNG FUEY - TV 'Mobisodes'

KUNG FUEY:

We need a crew of Writers, Editors, Sound Engineers and animators (colour-grading experience) for a series of 3 x 3 minute 'mobisodes' - mobile TV episodes. The footage will be taken from existing 70's Hong Kong Kung-Fu films (features) and re-written according to a comic-book aesthetic. These 'mobisodes' will then be taken back to Hong Kong/India and sold for a fee where we could then develop the narrative into another 7 mobisodes.

I'm enlisting you for help. I just returned from HK and met with a film company there that holds a large catalogue of kung fu movies circa 70's-80's. I proposed to them that the films could be re-edited and re-dubbed into smaller TV segments and sold to a Western TV channel. They gave me the green light to work with their older films and would finance it if I came up with an interesting product.

I have made a prototype of one film. However, I am neither a gifted script writer, nor a talented editor. If I can have the help of 2 or 3 people who are interested, we could possibly turn it around and re-sell it back to the original company.

Combined UNSW/NIDA Cinematography Project

Hey guys,

We received this information from Maria Fernandez in regards to finding latter-year Cinematography students. The message is as follows:

We're looking for any later year cinematography students interested in participating in a short film written/directed/co-produced by a talented young UNSW/NIDA student (and mentored by a renknowned Sydney theatre director).

The docu-drama explores issues of racism and immigration in Sydney and, through a blend of fact and fiction, focuses on government attitudes and policies and their implications. The main sequence is fictional and examines attitudes towards immigrants and the potential for change.

It's an excellent opportunity to work with a number of passionate and talented individuals (with a sense of humour!), to participate in a project dealing with some issues which have enormous significance for Australia; as well as gaining some experience and adding to your portfolio.... But please - only people with a
professional attitude should respond.

Filming will be over 2-3 weekends, and will start ASAP.

The project is an advert for an invented product, an organizer phone (the name of which is yet to be chosen).

The project itself will be of high standard:

- The sound track will be composed and performed by members of the Conservatorium of Music. The final orchestral performance to be recorded will comprise of 12 different woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments

- Actors will comprise of members from NUTS and NIDA

- Special effects and 3D elements will be produced by designers with commercial experience in their fields

- A craftsman is employed to build rigs for the shoots

- High end equipment will be used, such as the Sony PD150, Tascam DAP1 and Sennheiser MD 421V-5

There are still roles to be filled within the next couple of weeks. These are:

Lighting Director: Someone who has experience with gels for color balance and using reflectors

Lighting Crew: Extra hands on the shoot for reflectors and equipment etc

Camera Operator: Experienced with basic aspects of camera operation such as dividing image into thirds, controlled panning and zooming, shutter speed, focal length, importing MiniDV into Final Cut

Video Editor: Experience in Final Cut, and preferably some After Effects, for compositing all the shots

Sound Editor: Experience with recording music in a sound studio using a DAT recorder or equivalent and composing the soundtrack for integration with the footage using Protools or equivalent

This is a golden opportunity for anyone interested as the equipment and resources for the project are already organized for you.

Hey all chrispy here

Just a little update on the week to come and how you can get involved!:

Monday is pretty much allocated to logistical meetings and storyboarding so probly not the most for everyone to do yet on

Tuesday we have a number of events: Firstly there is a camera workshop help by our D.O.P Chris miles at Cofa starting at i believe 9 am till perhaps 4. For all those who have joined the camera crew it is almost compulsory for you to at least make an appearance at this and it is certainly open for anyone else who is interested in getting a little on set experience.

In the room adjacent myself and dani will be once again story boarding so if you are looking for me then that is were to find me. Afterwards if time permits we may be able to get a location visit in, just before rehearsals at 6pm.

Rehearsals this week, will be recorded for sound tests from our Sound designer 'Boone' and hopefully recorded on camera for visuals. A note to those involved though this process is not going to dictate the rehearsal in anyway so issues with quality or pauses will be reserved for a later rehearsal closer to the shoot date. The Rehearsal location is TBA at this point and well keep you posted.

Friday is out for anything as is Saturday and Sunday, due to Easter. Which leaves Wednesday and Thursday nights, i would like to make a visit to most of the locations again at the very least the ones i haven’t seen at this time so if anyone is interested jump on board with your availabilities.

Once again calls go out for anyone who has a well lived in house which they would be open-minded about having a film crew invade your life for a day give me a call.

Gareth or any animators who read this i am coming for you shortly muhahaha as well be getting the shots you need for modeling on tuesday, and production design any members that can make it to locations it is highly recommended. But don’t stress next week i believe Wednesday will be left entirely for a location run through. So make sure at that one.

Twenty Two Production Update

Just a quickie.

We had our Production Meeting on Sunday night with some great success. There were a few new faces and some of the key jobs we needed doing got done - that's what's great about having a big crew!

At the moment we're in discussions with our locations for the shoot in order to get clearances from them. It's been the single greatest problem till this point, but we feel like we're finally making some headway..

I've just spoken with the Metro Inn Motel in Ryde, and it looks like we may be shooting our Motel sequence there, depending on if we get the A.OK from our Director, Chrispy. Next up - Catholic Churches BABY!!

Environment Collective Shooting/Editing Opportunity

Hey everyone,

I hope you guys get to read this in time! Tomorrow, Thursday 30th March, there is an event being held by the Environment Collective from 1-2pm in front of the Library Lawn. They would like us to cover it, which means there is an opportunity for one of us to shoot/edit it. If you've been keeping up with your uni news, Simon Gazey at the Enviro Collective recently held a screening of some works he's done, so he's a keen film-type person also, which thus means it'll be shown somewhere!

Give Simon a call on 0403 433 214 ASAP if you're keen, and if you don't have a camera, he can provide you with one. The same deal goes for next Monday (April 3), when they'll be having a similar gig on. Ask him!

Monday 27th Screening

Hey guys!!

I see Koji's put up a very flattering picture of me... ASSHOLE!! Anyhoo, this is just a reminder to all that our screening will be this coming Monday, March 27th @ the Cougar Bar (upstairs from the Roundhouse). We're kicking off at 6pm with some drinks and chitty chat, with the beginning of the screenings at 7pm. Please come along and check out our efforts from last year, as well as a few updates on certain things.

As for what's happening at the moment, we're currently 4 weeks away from shooting "Twenty-Two". If you are interested in joining the crew, in whatever capacity, we'd love to have you. Please express your interest as soon as you can!

Hi all! Koji here. There are 2 short film competitions coming up. One is organised by Boo Hoo films. The contact email is at:

There's not much information but I suppose if you email them, you could find out the details of submitting your short film work. The other is the Harmony Film Festival. The deadline is September 29, it costs $30 to enter and this year's theme is 'Justice'. Their website is at:

Interested parties should form groups or let it be known if they're looking into forming a production team. If anyone needs help, let Eren and I know and we'll facilitate the proganisation of the team by arranging a meeting or brainstorming session.

DEEPA MEHTA IN DISCUSSION
When renowned Indian director Deepa Mehta commenced filming WATER in
2000,
only a handful of tranquil days passed before film sets were being thrown
in
the river, her effigy was being burned by protesters across the holy city
of
Varanasi and eventually, one man attempted suicide by jumping into the
Ganges. The production was banned from continuing in the interests of
"public safety".
India's most controversial filmmaker is soon touring Australia and will
be
appearing at Dendy Opera Quays to discuss the importance of her film
trilogy
Fire, Earth and most recent release, Water. Finding it impossible to
finish
Water in India, the filming was moved to Sri Lanka where filming
continued
under an assumed name and strict code of secrecy. Even with a committed
cast
and crew, it took a painful 5 years to complete and is to this day banned
from screening in India.

FIRE (1998) and EARTH (1999) - Mehta's films "a sort of social AIDS"?
When Mehta's first feature, FIRE was screened in Bombay, Thackeray's
so-called Shiv Sainiks (i.e. members of Shiv Sena) rampaged through a
matinee show, smashing glass and burning posters. The next day, theatres
in
New Delhi, Pune and Surat were similarly hit. "Is it fair to show such
things which are not part of Indian culture?" Bal Thackeray, asked in a
magazine interview. "It can corrupt tender minds. It is a sort of a
social
AIDS." Thackeray was referring to the lesbian relationship between the
two
main female characters in the film, relationships which he claimed did
not
exist in India. Every newspaper in India and many around the world
including the New York Times carried coverage of these events and thus
Thackeray achieved his objective of being seen as the protector of the
Hindu
faith. In spite of the fact that the Supreme Court ordered that troops
be
mustered to protect the theatres and armed guards be provided for
director
Mehta, the theatre owners were too intimidated to re-open Fire to the
public. Fire became the highest-selling pirated DVD in India.

WATER (2005)
Despite death threats against the director Mehta and the actresses
Shabana
Azmi and Nandita Das, Water continued production and is set to be
released
in Australia in March. Water is set in the holy city of Varanasi, India,
in
the late 1930s when the practice of child marriage was still prevalent.
Young girls were often wed to older men for economic reasons. When the
men
died, they left behind young widows who were farmed out to ashrams
(institutions). Considered a financial burden by their families, this was
generally the fate of most widows. This story follows the fate of an
eight-year-old widow and her life in an ashram where her presence starts
to
disrupt and affect the lives of the other residents.

Water is due to be released nationally on April 13th Deepa Mehta will be
discussing her film in an exclusive Q+A at Dendy Opera Quays on Tuesday
March 28th.

Brenda Blethyn's feature film breakthrough came with her moving performance in Mike Leigh's "Secrets and Lies" for which she won the Best Actress Award at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, a BAFTA Film Award and was nominated for an Academy Award. She was also nominated for both American and British Academy Awards for her role in "Little Voice", directed by Mark Herman. Blethyn made her film debut in 1990 after many triumphant years on the stage with a small part in Nicolas Roeg's "The Witches".

around 7-30ish, after which we'll go to see the 9.30 session of whatever's playing.

And last but not least, there's the 2005 works screening night. That's on the 27th March (Monday), Cougar Bar Roundhouse (2nd floor), 6pm. $5 for non-members and $3.50 for members.

As usual, all these events are uber important and beneficial to our club. More turnouts mean larger budgets mean higher quality works. So feel free to bring friends etc along. Most of us, including Eren and I, are constantly roping in friends, classmates, lecturers etc.

Hi all hi all. Today, a bunch of us took a 2 hour drive way up north for paintball. I was thinking of organising one for next session. Members, please give me a response if you're interested. It's $150 for a whole day. It might be cheaper if we get bigger numbers. But even so, there's lunch, a heck of a lot of bullets and yeah, it's loads and loads of fun!

Frighteningly addictive, even for a former army man like myself. Then again, I was a disastrous shot and had the tactical sense of an ostrich anyway.

78th Academy Awards And A Few Drunk Fools

The 78th Academy Awards and Monday night, a few decrepit CiNEsoc members decided to trash it out, drunken style, at house of Chris 'Chrispy' Panzetta. When Jack Daniels arrived, the night turned into a spew-fest with respected '22' crew members, producer Eren Sener, director Chris Panzetta and director of photography, Chris Miles, retching and bleeding left right centre.

Nonetheless, 3 Singaporeans and 1 ABC saved the day and remained the last ones standing. Come following morning, Eren somehow made it to class while both Chris' slept it off, only to spend the rest of the arvo storyboarding and location scouting.
